The 2011 Scottish/Irish Genealogy Cruise was a first for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Although not fully committed to attending every session, we found the ones that we were interested in were packed with useful information and presented well. Congratulations to everyone who contributed. As for the "Volendam" - we couldn't fault the accommodation, the cuisine or the attitude of the crew - always efficient, cheerful and helpful. The only minus, for us as non-smokers, was not being able to avoid coming into contact with cigarette smoke during the times that the casino was operating. Generally, the idea of holding a conference aboard ship is fabulous - long may it continue. The floating venue was great, the price was very affordable and the conference structure interesting and informative. Our thanks to you Alan and also to Ciaran at Clean Cruising for assistance with our queries.

This is a late response but I have been cruising (on an American line) and am just catching up. I was surprised to find that smoking was allowed in cabins and found, when on my balcony, that smoke was drifting up, down or along from someone else's balcony - most annoying as this is also an asthma trigger for me.

I enjoyed all your earlier cruise reports too - thanks for the wrap-up.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm never sure what people are more interested in, the cruise, the genealogy or both. The one thing I didn't mention is also the opportunity to catch up with friends from other states or even people I've only met in the 'virtual' world.

Great to read a useful commentary on the ship. I am a regular cruiser (but not genealogy focused) so nice to hear your comments which confirm my concerns - but at least that line knows there is a welcome difference between Canadian and American bacon, I'm still working on that one with Crystal Cruises who say no-one else asks for it.
2013 may be my debut for a genealogical cruise - but with only two ports it may be a hard call for first timers or partners.
So thanks to your comments

Thank you for all your posts about the cruise. I am seriously tempted by the 2013 cruise, especially as it is going to Fiji. I haven't been to Lautoka for many years either but somehow I don't think it will have changed much, judging by what I've seen elsewhere in Fiji.

I was very interested to read your comments. I absolutely agree with your comments about smoking and about round tables for ten being hopeless for conversation. I mentioned that in my report on the cruise in March.
