Growing up in Melbourne we had weekly fish and chips too. The kind of fish and chips that are cooked fresh when you order. My Dad always took me along to collect them and I remember how the smell filled the car. I loved them! Then we moved to Canberra and ugh. Pre-cooked fish (no choice in the type) fried again with the result being overcrisp oiliness Fish and chip nights stopped. There are now maybe 2 or 3 places in Canberra that do proper fish and chips, but the habit is broken. I still have fish and chips as often as I can manage when I am nearer the coast though.
